Poison sumac is a shrub that is native to the southern portions of the United States. It is commonly found in places withmoist soil, such as swamps and bogs. As is the case with its relatives, poison ivy and poison oak, the urushiol contained in the plants leaves often causes painful rashes in sensitive individuals. The smoke from burned poison sumac bushes can also result in allergic reactions and further complications are possible if the plant toxins end up in ones bloodstream.
